ART COMMUNITY CENTRE •  MEDAN PASAR , KL , MALAYSIA

Year: 2022

Project: Degree Semester 5

Technologies: Revit, Lumion, Photoshop

In response to contemporary challenges, the proposed architectural design serves as a community hub that goes beyond online interactions. It aims to connect diverse groups within the community and foster engagement through various art programs, inspiring creativity and innovation in the younger generation.

The design of the building draws inspiration and influence from the contextual elements and surroundings of the site. Key features such as the incorporation of arch ornaments, the creation of a natural pathway, and the influence of the "River of Life" theme are discernibly observed in the site's environment. These observed elements are abstracted and thoughtfully integrated into the overall design of the building.

Following are some challenges and implemented ideas :

- Positioned as a wayfinding indicator, the site seamlessly integrates with diverse programs and functional spaces, enhancing local identity and a sense of belonging. Taking cues from the manmade pathway in the surroundings, where pedestrian circulation is influenced by the elements, the idea is abstracted and implemented in the public space area of the site.

- The entire structure is elevated to maximize public space and establish entrances to the community center, seamlessly connecting with the existing 5-foot walkway. This design creates an open frontage with social stairs that serve as focal points for pedestrians arriving from Cosmo Hotel, the station-facing corner, and the cafeteria area.

- To address the varying height of adjacent buildings, the design divides the block into two parts, aligning each with the respective neighboring building heights. Proportional and layered elements enhance the fluidity of the building's skyline, introducing a dynamic stacking effect.

In summary, my primary focus is to position the community center as a focal point, drawing diverse age groups of locals together and fostering a cohesive community that inspires mutual support. Additionally, I aim to establish a distinctive local identity for the community center, defining it as a central node within the community.

Inspired by the "River of Life," a wave-like design is incorporated on the active facade of the building (front, back, and the side facing the public space). The arch structure is scaled with varying heights, creating an undulating appearance that forms an up-and-down pattern, symbolizing the thematic connection to the "River of Life."

The arch ornament also serves a dual purpose by framing the space and establishing a clear path-portal-place relationship in the overall space planning. *(diagram "frontage")

To enhance visual connectivity among users, a central void is sculpted, accommodating stairs that are layered side by side.

This design fosters increased communication between users utilizing the stairs and those on the floor level. The spatial layout is thoughtfully organized to align with user circulation and activities, encircling the stairs. Consequently, the design promotes heightened visual interaction, facilitating connections between stationary users and those in motion.

The ground floor is meticulously designed to cultivate a sense of belonging by facilitating social connections and everyday interactions that align with the existing surroundings and social behaviors of users. Incorporating greenery, awnings, and outdoor seating not only adds comfort but also bolsters local businesses, resulting in a vibrant and welcoming public space.

This floor also accommodates an eatery, enhancing the local food culture and fostering sustained community involvement.

A "framed" reading space adjacent to the windows is designed in the shape of book covers, serving to underscore the purpose of the space. These distinctive frames not only contribute to the aesthetic but also narrate stories to passersby.

The architectural influence of Masjid Jamek is evident in the dome, adorned with stained glass in red, blue, yellow, and white—symbolic of the colors of the Malaysian flag. This deliberate color choice not only instills a sense of identity but also injects vibrancy into the surrounding space.

The public space features exhibition areas, event spaces, and a platform for artisans, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Safe access, accommodations, and street enhancements prioritize efficient circulation and pedestrian experience. Gateway features, signage, and strategically placed billboards reinforce the area's identity.
